Sunscreen you will actually wear

S&R Beauty SPF 50 sunscreen gel

In shortWear a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every morning as the last step of your skincare, about two finger-lengths for the face and neck, fifteen minutes before you go out. Reapply every two hours outdoors and after swimming, sweating or towelling. S&R sunscreen is an SPF 50 gel with almond oil, aloe vera and niacinamide, water resistant, with no white cast, and suitable for every skin type.

Sunscreen is the one step that quietly does more than everything else in a routine put together. It is also the step most people skip, because the sunscreens they have tried felt heavy, left a white cast, or fought with their makeup. So before anything else: find one you do not mind wearing. That is not a luxury; it is the difference between sunscreen you own and sunscreen you wear.

UVA, UVB, and what SPF 50 actually means

Sunlight reaches your skin as two kinds of ultraviolet light, and they do different damage.

  • UVB is the burning ray. It is strongest around midday and in summer, and it is what turns skin red and sore.
  • UVA is the ageing ray. It is there all day, all year, it passes through clouds and window glass, and it is behind dark spots, uneven tone and lines that arrive earlier than they should.

The SPF number measures protection against UVB. SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of it, and SPF 50 roughly 98%. That sounds like a small step, but it means about a third less UVB gets through. Broad-spectrum means the formula protects against UVA as well, which is why it matters as much as the number. Ours is both: SPF 50, broad-spectrum against UVA and UVB.

Why it is a daily step in Egypt

Egypt has strong sun for most of the year, not just in summer. And because UVA passes through clouds and glass, the school run, the drive to work and the desk by the window all count. That is why dermatologists talk about sunscreen as an everyday habit rather than a beach accessory. If you only add one step to your routine this year, make it this one.

The sun does not check your plans.

How much, and when

Apply it generously and evenly about fifteen minutes before you go out. Generously is the word people underestimate: the protection on the tube is tested at a thick layer, so a thin smear gives you a fraction of it.

  1. Measure it. A simple guide is two finger-lengths of gel, squeezed along your index and middle fingers, for the face and neck.
  2. Dot, then spread. Dot it over the forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and neck, then smooth it out evenly.
  3. Remember the forgotten places. Ears, the back of the neck, the hairline, and the backs of your hands if the day is long.
  4. Give it a minute. Let it settle before makeup. The gel absorbs quickly, with an invisible finish.

Reapply. Really.

No sunscreen lasts a whole day. If you are outdoors, reapply every two hours, and straight away after swimming, sweating or towelling off. Ours is water resistant, which buys you time in the sea or at the pool, but water resistant is not waterproof, and the towel takes a layer off every time. At a desk indoors, a top-up before you head out in the afternoon is a good habit.

Where it goes in your routine

  1. Cleanse. Start with the face cleanser: basil, lemon and peppermint to clear the pores.
  2. Treat and moisturise with anything else you use.
  3. Sunscreen last. It goes on after skincare and before makeup, so nothing dilutes it.
  4. At night, wash it off. Cleanse again before bed so the skin starts the night clean.

With makeup

The gel texture means it can sit as a primer under makeup, and it can also go over it for a top-up during the day. If reapplying over a full face sounds unlikely, press it on gently with the fingertips rather than rubbing, concentrating on the cheekbones, nose and forehead where the sun lands first.

It is care, not just protection

  • Aloe vera

The formula carries almond oil, aloe vera and niacinamide, so it keeps skin moisturised and soothed while it shields, and it leaves a healthy glow rather than a film. It suits all skin types, including sensitive skin, which matters, because the skin that reacts to everything is exactly the skin that most needs to be out of the sun's way.

For your skin type

  • Oily or combination: a gel is your friend. It absorbs fast and does not feel greasy, so it will not add shine.
  • Dry: the almond oil and aloe vera help keep moisture in. Apply it over your usual moisturiser.
  • Sensitive: it is suitable for sensitive skin. As with anything new, try it on a small area first.
  • Deeper skin tones: no white cast, so it disappears into the skin instead of sitting on top of it.

The mistakes we see most

  • Wearing it only on beach days.
  • Using a thin layer and expecting the full SPF.
  • Putting it on once in the morning and never again on a long day out.
  • Mixing it into a moisturiser, which dilutes it. Layer it on top instead.
  • Forgetting the ears, neck and hands.

The short version

  • A generous, even layer, fifteen minutes before sun.
  • Again every two hours outdoors, and after water, sweat or a towel.
  • Last step of skincare, first step before makeup.
  • Every day, not only beach days.
